| Summary: |
Radio
frequency identification technology is used in a broad range
of applications, including Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)
systems, toll road passes such as EZ Pass and the US-VISIT system
at border crossings with Mexico and Canada.
In addition, RFID is an extremely powerful tool for inventory
management. Airlines are testing RFID systems for baggage handling.
Large retailers such as Wal-Mart have begun deploying RFID in
their warehouses. Last year, Wal-Mart mandated that all of its
suppliers use RFID by January 2005 and the U.S. Department of
Defense embraced the wireless technology, which has brought
RFID to the attention of the mainstream. More recently, Boeing
has announced plans of using RFID technology for inventory management
of 787 Dreamliner parts.
